Rune: Leave Your Mark on Gaming
November 8, 2023 • 10 minutes
Welcome to the inaugural issue of our newsletter. It's a place for us to share, engage, and keep you informed about the continuous evolution of Rune, reflect on the project as a whole and talk about the dynamic shifts within the gaming industry that impact us all. While we want to bring you the most pertinent news and events, we're also committed to maintaining a dialogue that's not only informative but also deeply connected to our collective gaming journey.
Since this is our first issue I'd also like to take a moment to share the story behind Rune. It's more than just a gaming platform; it's a personal mission born from a genuine love for gaming and a desire to better the industry for players and developers alike. This is where it all started.
A Reflection on the Genesis of Rune
My journey to founding Rune is a tale deeply rooted in a lifelong affair with gaming, tracing back to the earliest of the console wars between classmates; now extending to the emergent frontier of blockchain gaming. The nights spent lined up in the freezing Canadian cold outside of game shops waiting for midnight releases, the visceral thrill of yet again waking up in the back of the horse drawn cart in Skyrim, and the sheer dedication of chopping wood for hours to get my fancy new home built in Minecraft until I passed out at my desk — these are the experiences that shaped my youth.
These cherished moments, however, have long been overshadowed by some of the gaming industry's more recent disheartening tendencies driven by a need to maximize profits. For example, the inability to transfer my hard-earned or purchased skins across different platforms felt like an artificial barrier, one that served no one but the studios that enforced them.
Challenges faced by smaller developers also struck a chord with me. Smaller studios are consistently fighting an uphill battle against unfair revenue splits which has favored the giants of the industry, who can afford to absorb the costs. This has not only stifled growth of smaller developers but also limited the diversity of games able to reach the market.
It has become increasingly clear that the current business models dominating the industry were not built to nurture the artistry and innovation that gaming needs.
A Commitment to Artistry and Community
Our ambition extends beyond the conventional. We seek to curate a library of games that stand apart for their creativity, games that are as much a work of art as they are a mode of entertainment. In a marketplace often dominated by the same recycled ideas, Rune looks to be a sanctuary for the unique and the artistic, for games that ignite a sense of wonder and provide a canvas for imagination.
We're in pursuit of partnerships with developers whose creations embody the spirit of innovation. Our platform is a testament to games crafted with care, games that challenge the status quo and offer players not just a pastime, but an experience that is meaningful and transformative.
In today’s ever-evolving gaming climate, Rune emerges not just as a participant but as a pioneer with a purposeful vision. We see the gaming landscape not as a market to conquer, but as a community to nurture.
Rune is strategically positioned to unlock this potential, to champion games that do more than entertain—to craft experiences that become a part of the player’s very identity.
The Journey Ahead
Together, we can shape the future of gaming into one that celebrates creativity, inclusivity, and the sheer joy of playing. Thank you for joining us on this adventure. We look forward to sharing many more milestones, discoveries, and groundbreaking experiences with you.
