Game of the Week

Signalis: Navigating Dreams and Nightmares

Signalis, released in 2022, captivates players with its enigmatic narrative and retro-futuristic aesthetic. Set in a dystopian world governed by Eusan, the game delves into the totalitarian regime's oppression, introducing Replikas—androids created from human neural templates.

The contrast of outdated technology and advanced concepts creates an unsettling atmosphere, enhanced by the game's visual impact. The use of retro-futuristic technology, including clunky computers and CRT monitors, merges with upscaled low-res models, contributing to the game's unique aesthetic.

A central theme is bioresonance, connecting individuals on a profound level and influencing the shifting nightmare time loops of the Sierpinski facility. Ariane Yeong, a key character, possesses bioresonance capabilities, adding layers of complexity to the narrative.

Symbolism plays a crucial role, with recurring motifs like The Isle of the Dead and The King in Yellow reflecting Ariane's memories refracting upon the new world. Pareidolia, explored in the game, mirrors the dreamlike nature, with characters describing the blurring of self akin to being possessed by a ghost.

Repetition is employed as a narrative device, emphasizing cycles in the lives of Replikas, mine workers, and Ariane aboard the Penrose spaceship. The gradual corruption of reality and the loss of self contribute to the game's unsettling ambiance.

References to other media, such as Ghost in the Shell and Kairo, add depth to Signalis. The narrative unfolds in a dreamlike manner, rendering the timeline and reality unreliable. Signalis' surreal qualities extend to its art style, retrofuturism, and soundtrack, immersing players in a uniquely vague and significant world.

In the realm of gaming, Signalis stands as a marvellous feat, inviting players to delve into a dreamlike narrative that defies easy explanations. It's a testament to the developers' craftsmanship, offering an experience that resonates on multiple levels.

The battle between Baldur's Gate 3 and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 continues at the BAFTA's EE Players' Choice Award. The nominees include Tears of the Kingdom, Cyberpunk 2077, Fortnite, and Lethal Company. Baldur's Gate 3 has dominated previous award shows, but with the audience deciding, the competition is fierce. Nintendo Wins Legal Battle Against Yuzu Emulator: $2.4 Million Fine and Shutdown

In a swift resolution, Nintendo and Yuzu emulator developers have reached an out-of-court settlement. Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Yuzu, blaming it for mass piracy of "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom." Yuzu developers agreed to pay Nintendo a hefty $2.4 million in compensation, and both parties submitted a joint request to end the legal proceedings. Yuzu commits to ceasing all public offerings, marketing, and distribution, ensuring it won't be used for playing Nintendo Switch games. Additionally, the 3DS emulator Citra will also be discontinued as part of the settlement. Nintendo's victory underscores the legal complexities surrounding emulators and their potential for circumventing technical measures. While emulator use is legal, acquiring a protected system's BIOS copy is illegal.

Steam Hits Record 34 Million Concurrent Users: Three Top Games Less Than Two Months Old
Steam achieves a new peak with 34 million simultaneous active users, setting a fresh record. Among established titles, three of the most popular games contributing to this milestone are only a few months old.

New Steam Player Record
On March 3, Steam saw a record-breaking 34,649,583 simultaneous active users, marking a new high for the platform, as reported by SteamDB. Notably, this surpassed the previous record of around 34.3 million users, set less than 24 hours earlier.

However, it's crucial to distinguish between active users and active players. At the record's peak, 11,146,564 individuals were actively engaged in a game. The peak with the highest number of simultaneously active players occurred about a month prior, on January 29, boasting an impressive 11,582,167 users.

What Were Players Enjoying?
Within the top 10 games on Steam during the record-setting moment, three titles released in the last two months stood out for their substantial player base.

Palworld garnered significant attention, securing the second spot on Steam's top list with 2.1 million players. Alongside Naraka: Bladepoint and Last Epoch, Palworld each contributed around 225,000 players to the record.

The cooperative shooter Helldivers 2 deployed almost 300,000 soldiers. Yet, stalwart Steam titles made substantial contributions: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (1.5 million), Dota 2 (727,000), PUBG (633,000), and Apex Legends (453,000) all hit their daily player peaks.

Additionally, GTA 5 and Wallpaper Engine featured in the top 10, collectively contributing around 4.6 million players to the 11.1 million total. The remaining players dispersed across hundreds of other games.

CryptoPunks Frenzy: $16 Million Splurge on Rare NFT

In a jaw-dropping move, an anonymous buyer recently spent over $16 million in Ethereum to acquire CryptoPunk #3100, marking the second-largest on-chain purchase for a CryptoPunks NFT. The transaction involved a whopping 4,500 ETH, emphasizing the extraordinary value attributed to these rare digital collectibles.

The purchased CryptoPunk, #3100, is one of only nine Alien Punks among the 10,000-piece CryptoPunks collection, elevating its rarity and driving the substantial bid. This acquisition follows the trend of Alien Punks commanding some of the highest bids in the NFT market, with the record set by #5822, an Alien Punk, selling for nearly $24 million.

The buyer's persistence was evident, having initially bid 4,250 ETH, only to retract the offer and return with an increased bid of 4,500 ETH. The move ignited discussions on social media, with some interpreting it as a positive signal for the crypto market's resurgence, echoing the bullish sentiment sparked by the recent Bitcoin rally.

While CryptoPunk #3100 now stands as the second-most expensive profile picture (PFP) NFT ever sold, it falls short of the record held by digital artist Beeple's "Everydays: The First 5,000 Days," which fetched a historic $69.3 million. CryptoPunks, originating in 2017, continue to be a powerhouse in the NFT space, with trading volumes surpassing $2.75 billion and individual prices starting above $200,000 in ETH.

RTFKT Unleashes Project Animus: 40,000 Unique Creatures Set to Dominate

In a recent update, RTFKT unveiled Project Animus, a groundbreaking collection featuring around 40,000 distinct creatures boasting unique powers and capabilities. These entities, known as Animi, are poised to play a pivotal role in aiding Clones during their adventures, emerging from EGGs—NFTs currently under claim by Clone X holders—following an incubation phase.

The project outlined that the supply of Animi will be influenced by upcoming Lore moments, injecting an element of unpredictability into the ecosystem. With 19,437 Clone X holders in the mix, each is entitled to mint one EGG, while Clone X mint vial holders must reveal their Clone X NFTs to secure their EGG during the open claim period, extending until the public sale.

RTFKT clarified that the final Animi supply will cap at 40,000, and though the public sale price remains undisclosed, the current floor for the EGGs collection sits at 1.25 ETH. The Animi lineup promises diversity in species, designs, and elemental traits, with RTFKT already teasing enthusiasts with videos and images, offering a glimpse into the artistic world behind Project Animus.
